Unfortunately most of the aboriginal info you mention here is not discussed or even known by most visitors to the island. It was used as a prison (penal settlement) for aboriginals when first colonized and hundreds died there. It is a fantastic place to visit all year round but is best between October and April, when the weather is warm enough to enjoy the fantastic beaches. The snorkeling can be done off the beaches so you do not need a boat or anything. Getting there is easy by ferry as there are several running to the island from a couple of places on the mainland every day, all year round. I hope you are all inspired to come and enjoy it.
